Also at the LSPU Hall, the Beothuck Street Players
staged two intense dramas. Martin McDonagh's darkly
comic The Beauty Queen of Leenane, set in creepy auld
Ireland, took the best-production award at the provincial
drama festival. Their other show was Frank McGuinness
s moving story of three westerners taken hostage in
Lebanon. Someone Who ll Watch Over Me featured a claustrophobic,
prison-cell set and very strong performances by Mike
Coady, Fred Hawksley and Kevin Lewis. In November,
the company deftly capped an artistically successful
year with an affecting production of Ellen Byron s
Graceland, a story of lost love and hero worship,
set in Louisiana.
