Michael Coady is an award-winning actor from St. Johns, Newfoundland, Canada, with more than 15 years experience on stage and before camera. A dynamic and versatile actor, Michael has received critical acclaim for his performances. Having just moved to Los Angeles, Michael continues to build an exciting career. With over 35 productions to his credit, Michael has worked professionally in film, television and theatre in Canada since 1999. He has made guest star and co-star appearances on shows like the hit TV CBC series, Republic of Doyle, the History Channel series, Zero Hour - North Hollywood Shootout. In Los Angeles, Michael has been steadily building relationships with indie film producers, directors and casting directors. He has appeared in numerous short films, including Obsession, which he co-wrote, co-produced and starred in. In 2010, Michael completed another 3 short films that will make the festival circuit in 2011. Also in 2011, Michael is looking forward to travelling Romania to shoot the Global Film Studios feature, Abused in America, directed by Bruno Pischiutta. In addition to his voiceover work, Michael has also recorded sketch comedy for a new talk variety radio program at CBC Studios in Toronto and ABC Radio Networks in Los Angeles. His commercial campaigns for Canadian Women's Foundation and as spokesman for the Canadian Association of Optometrists have been in high rotation across Canada. With a strong background in theatre, some of Michael's career highlights have included the East Coast Canadian premiere of the Tony Award winning (and Oscar-nominated) work of John Patrick Shanley, Doubt, A Parable. Michael produced the Burning Boat Theatre production of Doubt and starred in the lead He was a member of the Original Canadian Cast of the Broadway Hit, Urinetown. In this Canadian premiere directed by John Rando (Tony Award winning director of the Broadway production), Michael was first understudy for the lead, Officer Lockstock while playing the role of Robby the Stockfish. This CanStage show also swept the Dora Awards (Canada's answer to the Tonys) in 2005, taking 6 awards including, Outstanding Production of a Musical. He also played Juan Peron in Evitaat the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts and Ernst Ludwig in Cabaret at the New Yorker Theatre. Michael has studied On-Camera Scene Study at Professional Actors Lab with David Rotenberg whose roster of students includes Rachel McAdams and Scott Speedman. In Los Angeles, he has studied at the Australian Institute of Dramatic Arts and studied Ivan Chubbuck's technique with Benson Simmonds. Michael comes from a rich theatre background in Newfoundland. Newfoundlanders are born storytellers with the gift of gab and sense of humor bred in the bone and Michael relishes the opportunity to work "at home" whenever he can. Having already "cut vinyl" in Grade 3 with that staple of music collections everywhere "Merrily We Sing" by the Holy Cross Primary School Choir, Michael made his first steps on the theatrical stage in grade 5 with the Holy Cross Boys School musical production of "Tom Sawyer". That was it! There was no turning back! Michael has worked with several commmunity and professional theatre troupes throughout Newfoundland and Labrador, while directing and adjudicating high school drama around the province. He joined the Beothuck Street Players (BSP) when they formed in 1995. He has played roles in 8 BSP productions, including Billy Bibbit in One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, Mickey Johnson in the musical Blood Brothers, Adam in Someone Wholl Watch Over Me, and Juan Peron in the musical Evita. He served as President of the group from 1999 - 2002. Michael has also made regular appearances at the Newfoundland and Labrador Drama Festival, receiving critical acclaim, acting awards and nominations for his work. In Festival productions of Martin McDonagh's The Beauty Queen of Leenane and The Lonesome West (which both garnered Best Play awards), Michael received nominations for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor, respectively. At the 2002 Newfoundland and Labrador Drama Festival, he received the award for Best Supporting Actor for his work as Marc in Art with the St. Johns Players. From 1999 - 2003, Michael performed musical theatre with Spirit of Newfoundland Productions, a professional theatre company in St. Johns. He has delighted audiences in the troupes self-written, self-styled productions of musical theatre comedy as well as in such shows as I Love You, Youre Perfect, Now Change. In 2003, he finished a run to sold-out audiences in A Closer Walk with Patsy Cline, performing with boundless energy and confidence the male lead as 4 different characters - Little Big Man, Joltin Jim McCoy, Melvin the Grand Ol Opry Comic and Don the Vegas Comic. |
